What is the best time for a newborn and baby session?

What is the best time for a newborn and baby session? By Aix-en-Provence baby photographer

Expecting parents often ask me what is the best time to do a newborn photo session. The answer totally depends on the photographer. Many newborn photographers, who pose babies, require the newborn to be two weeks or less at the time of the session.

In my Aix-enProvence portrait studio, I love to photograph babies of all ages! The important information that I share with the parents is that the sessions and types of portraits are adapted to your baby and its age.

Babies 4 weeks-old and less are usually what I would call ‘newborn photo sessions’. Babies are photographed on a duvet or on a beanbag with a white or dark background. When the babies are two weeks or less, they are usually more sleepy, which allows for creating more variety in their gallery. When the newborns are 2-4 weeks old, they might be more awake and some awake newborn photos are more likely.

Babies 1 to 3 months are still tiny yet more awake. It is a beautiful age to capture their first expressions and smiles. Since they still have a softer neck, I love to capture them in their parent’s arms and to create meaningful portraits focusing on the connections. For babies more than 3 months and/or with a strong neck, more poses are possible, with and without the parents (tummy time being a favorite!).

Babies 7 months old (or at any age when they can sit by themselves) are so much fun to capture. Sitting, standing with help, on their back, making funny faces and showing their sense of humor and personality, are some of my favorites during these baby sessions.

I also love to create timeless first birthday portraits (also called “cake smash photography session”) during Baby First Birthday Photo Session.
