Style guide: What to wear for your photo session? Shades of pink inspired by Central Park in NYC
Apr 17, 2019
Central Park is in full bloom! The magnolias and cherry blossoms are making their magic and it looks like New York has been given a new kiss of life!
The cherry blossom and its gorgeous, soft pink is so invigorating! I believe that pink is an underrated color. To me, it is the color of enchantment, of delicateness. It might sound unusual, but I love using pink during my portrait sessions. Pink is complimentary to most skin tones. Soft pink looks beautiful on pale skins, while brighter shades appear gorgeous on darker features. All is in the art of creating a sense of unity and balance in the set up that you want for your final photographs.
Here is a styling board that I created for this month, inspired by Central Park’s beauty:
I do not recommend mixing different types of tones. For example, I wanted to create a spring look for the motherhood session below. The wreath was the main (and only) prop that we used during this photo session. The wreath had shades of pink, champagne and light yellow. The only other color was the white wall of the studio (my studio is entirely white). We coordinated everything around these colors. The girl’s dress was chosen to be in perfect harmony with the tones of the wreath. The mom wore white, a neutral color and the same as the studio, to not overload the image.
Pink can also appear in small touches like in accessories. For the baby and family photo session below, the girls wore headbands that give a pop to the image, while keeping it classic and timeless.
While I work mainly with white and neutral colors for newborn sessions, I like to sometimes use a touch of very soft pink (that I consider a ‘neutral’) for a special setup. I love the ethereal look it gives to the portrait, like in the image below.
Style and clothing can literally make or break your portraits. That is why I spend all the time necessary to discuss the outfits with my clients, whether it is for a maternity, baby, motherhood or family photo session. If you do not want to go/like shopping, or would rather spend the money on photography artwork for your home, I even have a Classic Client Closet with elegant and flattering dresses for moms and classic and beautiful outfits for little ones. All the fun of a stylish photo session, without the shopping fever.
